County starts household poverty eradication project

BY GOVERNOR’S PRESS SERVICE

Governor Joshua Irungu has embarked on household poverty eradication programme targeting groups below the poverty line in the county.

The Household Economic Empowerment Programme (HEEP) aims at reducing poverty level in the county with about 47 per cent living below the poverty line.

HEEP trains organised groups in a variety of income generating projects. Depending on the nature of the project, groups are provided with incubators for eggs, rabbits and dairy goats. Those receiving the incubators will also be provided with eggs.

Launching the programme in Kalalu, Umande Ward of Laikipia East, on Wednesday, Governor Irungu said a good poverty eradication initiative must start at household level. He added that poverty level in the county will decline drastically one year from now. He expressed his determination to ensure the programme succeeds, no matter what challenges may come ahead of it.

The Governor said his mandate is to serve the people of Laikipia, and all he has been doing for the county is not any political mileage but for the well being of the people.

The Governor was speaking during the launching of HEEP in Kalalu. The HEEP has also been launched in Rumuruti, Ilipolei and Lamuria.

On the other hand, the County Minister for Trade and Industrialisation Jane Putunoi said she has set aside money, in the 2015/16 budget, to put up a market at Maili nane trading centre in Kalalu.

Present during the meeting were the Umande MCA Peter Maruga, Minister for Agriculture Duncan Mwariri, Minister for Finance and Planning Mr Wamichwe, Acting County Secretary Charles Nderitu and other officials.
